This hallowed place was visited by boat by Hutton, Hall and Playfair in June 1788 when the ‘…mind seemed to grow giddy by looking so far back into the abyss of time’. On my own pilgrimage in October 2020 I saw horizontal Old Red Sandstone (yes, it is red), deposited by rivers in Devonian times, underlain by vertical ‘greywacke’ (yes, it is grey), deposited in Ordovician oceans and enjoying deformation as continents collided. The contact between the two opens the mind to the length of time needed for these processes to play out, which now we can measure in tens of millions of years.

“Hutton's … laboured, rambling style of writing … did nothing to help promote his ideas” (Phil Stone), so his concepts were promoted by his friends such as Playfair, successors such as Lyell, and modern geologists for whom “The location continues to inspire and instills a sense of duty in us, as scholars of the Earth’s formation, to communicate and share the principles of deep time” (Stuart Archer). For example, Rob Butler’s excellent YouTube video describes a virtual field trip, the realities of access via a very steep slippy grassy slope, and the way in which 'geologists build an understanding of the Earth through deductive reasoning’.

Siccar Point Panorama, Steve Garrett (2020)

Yet there is more to be said. Over the past ten years this location has begun to inspire poets and musicians, particularly those based in and around this part of Scotland, as they explore geology in creativity.

Poet Tarn MacArthur says this is ’ …where giddy minds are left to plumb their deeper misconceptions of deep time.’ Jack Cooper senses that ‘the cliffs are at my back and eternity stretches ahead above beneath’. Edinburgh geo-poet Patrick Corbett ‘tries to grasp the contradictions between the two types of rock … to capture the upheaval and erosion over an unknown period of time”; his poem is cleverly portrayed on a stratigraphic sketch with the ‘older’ words eroded at the contact between the two layers.

Siccar Point, by Patrick Corbett (2019), published in The Edinburgh Geologist

Karine Polwart and Dave Milligan's (both from nearby East Lothian) song ‘Siccar Point’ chronicles the journey of Hall, Playfair and Hutton who saw how “sharp grey ribs rise up … a lost seabed lifted to the stars” and reflects that “the Earth is never still, it’s never still”.

A stand-out talk at the 2024 ‘Earth’s Canvas’ conference was by emerging Scottish artist Calum Wallis. He invited viewers to “engage with deep time when time is tight” by conveying, with realism, images from rock to paper through a lengthy process of drawing, etching and printing. The rocks in question are of the Old Red Sandstone, deposited in rivers in a hot climate around four hundred million years ago south of the equator, and exposed today and eroded by the colder wind, rain and tides north of Arbroath in northeast Scotland.

During the talk, revealing the work (‘Where everything stands, for now’) drew involuntary ‘oohs’ from the audience - rarely, if ever, heard before in the hallowed halls of Burlington House, home of the Geological Society in Picadilly, London. He later returned to the site and what he saw had changed. He emulated the process of erosion by the very bold step of exposing the intricately etched plate to rusting by sea water. Revealing the resulting work ‘In a few moments time’ drew even louder involuntary ‘aaahs’.

Calum’s studio in Dundee displays the geological map of Scotland juxtaposed with photos of interesting rock and stone. Calum’s philosophy is articulated nicely on his website:

‘ … I have found that my true joy in observing stone is not its unblinking, unchanging stasis – rather it’s the fact that stone is alive. It is far too easy to read the face of the earth as static due to our limited scope of a human lifetime. However, by engaging in deep observation one can see stone as it erodes and is rebuilt in new forms …it is taking place in front of us.’

Although his discipline is solitary, he found that:

‘Earth’s Canvas provided a forum that I had no idea I was in need of. My artwork studies erosion and humanities’ place in deep time and it’s making necessitates a large amount of time spent in solitude, both among rocks and in the studio. In the solitude of this practice, I had believed this field of inquiry was narrow - until I attended Earth’s Canvas. Here I met like-minded people who were pushing the boundaries of creative engagement with geology in more directions than I could have imagined …The relevance and timeliness of gathering such thinkers in one room cannot be overstated … catalysts for new ways of seeing and thinking.’

Side-by-side, these etchings illuminate the texture of the rock, narrate the processes of erosion, and provide a memory of significant moments from the ‘Earth’s Canvas’ event.

‘Where everything stands, for now’, 2023 , etching, 62 x 48cm.

‘In a few moments time, etching from heavily rusted plate', 2024, 62 x 48cm.

In the studio

Calum Wallis
https://calumwallisart.com
https://www.instagram.com/calwals
Earth’s Canvas
https://geoscientist.online/sections/unearthed/earths-canvas-2
https://www.earthheritage.org.uk/wp/wp-content/uploads/EH-62_final_web.pdf
Old Red Sandstone
https://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/3231/
https://webapps.bgs.ac.uk/Memoirs/docs/B06846.html
Seaton Cliffs, Arbroath
https://www.scottishgeologytrust.org/geology/51-best-places/seaton-cliffs-arbroath/

Following on from her performance at 2024's Earth Canvas concert (for which I was agent, roadie, sound engineer and compere) here's my review of Olivia Rafferty’s 2025 geoscience-inspired album, published in Geoscientist Magazine of the Geological Society of London.

Earth science has at times inspired the creation of music, including contemplation of deep time by modern classical composer John Luther Adams, ambient chamber works by Michael Begg and storytelling in folk song by Karine Polwart. But until now there have been few pop songs inspired by geology, with a notable exception of Björk’s ‘Mutual Core’, which draws parallels between tectonic plates and human connections. So, the new album Typical Forever from London-based Scottish singer-songwriter Olivia Rafferty is welcome, born of enthusiasm and wonder when learning about the planet.

Musicians take risks by putting their heart and soul into a work and releasing it into the world, so this joining of science and creativity is commended. The project was seeded by a lockdown winter watching geology lectures online, with subsequent background research leading to an insight that Earth’s processes could be viewed as analogous to events in our life as humans; as Olivia writes, “Who you are is made up of a bedrock of layers and layers of all the people you once were”.

The album’s title is a nod to Charles Lyell’s principle of uniformitarianism. The indy pop songs build on themes such as ancient precipitation before life emerged (‘Raindrops’), catastrophic floods (‘Coulee City Rodeo Queen’), cycles of erosion and mountain building (‘Cascade’), plate tectonics (‘Juan de Fuca’), volcanic landmarks (‘Lion Eats the Stars’), seismic simulations (‘Earthquake Room’), reflections on change (‘Fossils’) and a future era without humanity (‘Green Skies’). Overdubbed harmonies help to give some songs an epic feel, such as on the standout track ‘Cascade’. Elsewhere, a stripped-down approach with acoustic guitar and evocative vocals leads to a more intimate atmosphere, echoing fellow Scottish singer-songwriter K T Tunstall’s EP Scarlet Tulip.

Listening evokes memories of the 2024 Geological Society of London’s ‘Earth’s Canvas’ concert in the Upper Library at Burlington House, where Olivia sang accompanied only by her guitar, gently engaging the audience in this iconic setting. Typical Forever should appeal across a broad range of age, geological enthusiasm and musical interest. This album, along with other music inspired by Earth, can help to communicate geology to fresh audiences in new ways at a time when the discipline seeks to increase its recognition and impact across society.

Geoscientist review
https://geoscientist.online/sections/books-and-arts/olivia-rafferty-typical-forever-album-review/
Geoscientist interview
https://geoscientist.online/sections/unearthed/olivia-rafferty-perspectives-on-time/
Typical Forever
https://oliviarafferty.bandcamp.com/album/typical-forever
Olivia Rafferty
http://www.oliviarafferty.com
Earth's Canvas
https://geoscientist.online/sections/unearthed/earths-canvas-2/

Julie Brook’s Tide Line was built in 2025 as part of the nationwide Beach of Dreams project. Parking at the furthest northeast Cellardyke Car Park, a notice points you towards the installation: ‘Tide Line is an invitation to walk in the intertidal space of the seabed made from the surrounding stones. The tides are a powerful expression of the gravitational pull of the moon on the oceans. At the moments of the incoming tide 2 hours before high tide and at the outgoing tide 2 hours after there is a dynamic tension that Tide Line reveals where you can see the shift and change of the tide clearly marked and sense this gravitational pull.’ Evidence of the impact of the tide is also shown by the Cellardyke Tidal Pool which has been restored for swimming, kayaking and recreation.

15 minutes walk up the Fife Coastal Path, a painted rock points you to the installation. When Tide Line is exposed it offers an invitation to explore the rock that the path cuts across and winds around. The Anstruther Formation is largely a non-marine section of river, delta and lake deposits, with shaley marine bands where the sea had flooded over the land. It was deposited 337-331 million years ago during the Carboniferous period. In some ways you could view this as the edge of a Carboniferous coast. Prominent N-S sandstone ridges stand proud and limestone bands are distinguished by their cuspate weathering. Tide Line hugs depressions in softer rocks which may contain marine bands. Just to the northeast of Tide Line are fossil trees marked on the OS map near Caiplie.

Today’s tides flood the path on a twice-daily basis, and the artist has responded to the primal force of gravity experienced today. But my geologist’s mind was thrown back more than 300 million years imagining regression of the sea as deltas built out the land, followed by a flooding as sea level rose again, over cycles of perhaps tens or hundreds of thousands of years.

This is a new installation which merits more visits. It can be difficult to time a visit correctly given the 3m tidal range and the rate of rise and fall. Tide tables and cycles are accessible online for visitors but a web site or app might help to demonstrate the optimum time each day in the tidal cycle to experience the moments of ‘dynamic tension’. To improve accessibility, clearer signing at Cellardyke Car Park and a notice on the Fife Coastal Trail would help determined walkers miss may it on their way past, particularly when heading southwestwards as the painted sign is not visible in that direction. Perhaps these improvements are already underway.

All field notes should have additional points to help you remember the visit.
